Machu Picchu is now Carbon-neutral

The Historical Sanctuary of Machupicchu has been recognized as a carbon-neutral destination, an achievement achieved thanks to the articulated work between local civil society and the public and private sectors, with the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of this area of the country as the main axis.

To obtain this international certification, this natural and historical site in Peru has managed to reduce its carbon footprint, offering visitors a climate-responsible experience in line with the great challenges of caring for the planet. To this end, since 2016 it has been working on decarbonization with the implementation of treatment plants for organic waste and plastics and the promotion of protocols to reduce their generation.

The district and the Machupicchu Historic Sanctuary are aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions (carbon neutrality) by 2050, contributing to the national commitment made in the Paris Agreement.
