Recommendations for the Inca Trail

About the weather:

The route of the Inca Trail parts from the Sacred Valley and goes through some parts of the rainforest, so the weather varies depending on the time of year and the altitude of the trekking route:

Dry season (May to September): During the day, temperatures can range from mild to warm, typically between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Nighttime temperatures can drop significantly, especially at higher altitudes, ranging from 0°C to 5°C (32°F to 41°F).

This period is characterized by minimal rainfall, making it the most popular time for trekking. However, occasional light showers are still possible, especially in early May and late September.

Rainy Season (November to March):

Daytime temperatures can still be comfortable, ranging from 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F). Nights are milder but can still drop to around 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F).

This season experiences frequent rainfall, particularly from December to February. Rain showers can be heavy and prolonged, leading to muddy trails and reduced visibility. March tends to be drier than the peak rainy months.

To avoid extreme weather conditions with heavy rain, we do not operate the Inca Trail in February.

About the altitude:

The Inca Trail covers a wide range of elevations, from about 7,900 feet (2,400 meters) at the trailhead to nearly 13,800 feet (4,200 meters). As you ascend, temperatures generally drop and weather conditions can change rapidly.

Higher elevations are cooler and more prone to fog and mist, which can obscure views of the surrounding landscape.

What to pack for the Inca Trail:

For our Inca Trail program, we will lend you a duffel bag with a limited weight of 6kgs (12 pounds) for your personal belongings. This weight is taken into account in order to comply with the Inca Trail guidelines imposed by the authorities.

Since we will be doing long treks and going through different climates, it is best to pack wisely and pack clothes to dress in layers, so here is a checklist for you to follow when packing:

  • Thermal layer

  • Fleece jacket

  • Long, tightly woven, light-colored cotton pants made of lightweight, breathable, quick-drying material.

  • Long-sleeved, tightly woven, light-colored cotton shirts made of lightweight, breathable, quick-drying material

  • Head gear: hat / head band / neck gaiter

  • Good waterproof, ankle-high trekking shoes

  • Poncho or rain jacket

  • Trekking towel

  • Sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses

  • Slides or sandals

  • Insect repellent

  • Don't forget to bring your camera and a portable power pack, as we will not have access to electricity on some parts of the Inca Trail.

We also recommend bringing these personal items:

  • Moist wipes
