About the weather and what to pack for Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata

About the weather:

The rainforest is a vast area with high annual rainfall, very dense vegetation, and relatively warm temperatures.

The Tambopata National Reserve is one of the few easily accessible tropical rainforests in the world and Puerto Maldonado, known as the "Capital of Biodiversity", is the largest city in the Tambopata region and where most of our recommended lodges are located.

Tambopata is slightly seasonal - although nothing like the temperate zone. Although it can rain at any time of the year, Tambopata is drier from April to November, when the rains stop and start respectively. The wettest months are January and February, but even then it rarely rains.

The advantages of visiting during the dry season are that there is very little chance that your activities will be affected by rain.

The advantages of visiting during the rainy season are that the macaws are more active on the clay licks and they are nesting. If you are interested in macaws, come between December and February when the nesting season is in full swing.

What to Pack for a Trip to Tambopata:

Here are some packing recommendations for your next adventure:

• Long, tightly woven, light-colored cotton pants made of lightweight, breathable, quick-drying material.

• Long-sleeved, tightly woven, light-colored cotton shirts made of lightweight, breathable, quick-drying material

• Good waterproof, ankle-high trekking shoes

• Rain gear (backup is a good idea)

• Binoculars (optional)

• Canteen (to keep you hydrated during the excursions)

• Sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses

• Rain suit or poncho

• Small daypack or backpack

• Slides or sandals

• Insect repellent

• Don't forget your camera and/or camcorder (we recommend a waterproof case) and bring your long lens!

  *Most lodges loan rubber boots for excursions on rainy days, so that you don’t have to bring them.
