Peru is one of the best destinations for birdwatching

Peru has become one of the world's leading destinations with the greatest diversity of birds, with nearly 1879 species*.

In a joint effort with the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), an organization attached to the Ministry of the Environment, and the scientific community identified and registered the total number of species, adding 14 new ones to the official list of Peruvian birds.

Peru has a large number of destinations with unique endemic birds that can be found in protected natural areas such as the Tambopata National Reserve in the department of Madre de Dios, the Historical Sanctuary of Bosque de Pómac in Lambayeque, the National Sanctuary of the Tumbes Mangroves in the region of the same name, the Cavinzas Islands and Palomino Islets in Callao, among others.

Last year, Peru ranked first in the October Big Day 2023, the world's largest birdwatching event, organized by the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology. Experts and enthusiasts gather to compile and register the largest number of bird species from each country in 24 hours.

For nature-oriented and birdwatching enthusiasts, Peru now offers another compelling reason to visit.
